Organize by when you need it
Keep frequently used items accessible and group the rest by purpose. Use small pouches for navigation essentials, repair items, and personal supplies rather than loose items scattered throughout a pack.
Keep weather changes within reach
Place a shell or extra layer near the top. Protect items that need to stay dry and check closures before heading out.
Do a practice carry
Load the pack with the gear you intend to bring and walk locally. Adjust the fit, check for shifting contents, and remove unnecessary duplication. Match your preparation to the route and conditions; this article is not a complete backcountry safety checklist.
